Jenkintown Giant now has pending liquor license with PLCB, Willow Grove Amazon Fresh still expected to open

The forthcoming Giant grocery store in Jenkintown now has a pending liquor license with the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB).

Last month, Glenside Local reported that Jenkintown Borough Council’s August 28 agenda included a public hearing on the transfer of a liquor license from an Amazon Fresh store in Upper Moreland Township to Giant Company, LLC. The hearing was necessary because the license to be transferred is from outside the borough.

The license application as listed on the PLCB’s website is below:

“We approved it, and the next step will be state approval,” borough manager George Locke said. “They had to submit the resolution and then we got notice from the PLCB.”

The PLCB’s notice to the borough is below:

Giant representative Tom Cormier told the borough in June that the forthcoming grocery store will not open until early 2025. It was originally expected to open by Thanksgiving.

In related news, The Giant Company put out a press release earlier this month noting that it applied for and received permits and licenses from the PLCB to sell canned cocktails at 138 of its locations. Stores began to display products on September 16 and will continue adding varieties over the coming days and weeks, the company said.

“Our stores have been a destination for beer and wine since 2011 and 2016, respectively, and we have heard from our customers about the convenience of being able to grab ready-to-drink cocktails while grocery shopping too,” Rebecca Lupfer, senior vice president and chief merchant, said in the statement.

Signed into Pennsylvania law on July 17, Act 86 of 2024 introduces the sale of ready-to-drink cocktails to the liquor code. Act 86 defines ready-to-drink cocktails as pre-mixed drinks made from distilled liquor and other nonalcoholic liquids packaged by the manufacturer in containers of up to 16 ounces.

Lastly, the Amazon Fresh, to be located in the Willow Grove Shopping Center, is still on track to open, according to Upper Moreland Township.

“Amazon Fresh is still planning on opening in Willow Grove, we have heard nothing to the contrary,” township manager Patrick Stasio said in an email.
