The following fire companies in greater Glenside have released the dates, times, and details for their upcoming open houses:
La Mott Fire Company (Cheltenham Township): October 12
To celebrate the 2024 Fire Prevention Week theme, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!” La Mott Fire Company invites community members to its open house on October 12. The event will take place at the fire station, 7600 Penrose Ave, Elkins Park, from 12 to 3 p.m. Community members can meet local firefighters, watch live demonstrations and learn smoke alarm fire safety tips in conjunction with this year’s theme.
“Fire Prevention Week is a great opportunity to not only spread fire safety awareness, but spend time with residents we help protect,” said Firefighter Teryn Dark. “We hope to see a lot of community members at our event.”
Smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half (54 percent), according to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA). Once the smoke alarm sounds, occupants could have less than two minutes to get out safely. Working smoke alarms give them early warning to get outside quickly.
In conjunction with this year’s theme, La Mott Fire Company offers these key smoke alarm safety tips and guidelines:
● Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on each level (including the basement) of the home.
● Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button.
● Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or no longer work.
● Ensure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
“Our volunteers are trained and ready to respond at a moment’s notice,” said President Ken Hellendall. “Being part of our fire company means being part of a family, and we hope this event inspires others to join us in serving the community.”
Working smoke alarms are the first line of defense in a home fire, but residents count on the volunteer firefighters of La Mott Fire Company to keep them safe. Those interested in giving back to the community and finding a second family at the fire company can sign up to volunteer. No experience is necessary. Training and gear are provided.
