Amalia Saavedra, a fifth-grade student at Wyncote Elementary (Cheltenham School District), was named a winner of Montgomery County’s 2026 Art & Poetry of Freedom Contest.

Winners were announced at the Montgomery County Courthouse on June 16. The ceremony included a reading of the Emancipation Proclamation, musical performances, and contest winners assisting in raising the Juneteenth flag.

County commissioners also presented a proclamation to Charles M. Whiting, a former Upper Moreland Township commissioner and Eagle Scout leader, educator, and Upper Moreland Free Public Library president for over five decades.

A U.S. Military veteran, Whiting was sworn into office in 2018. He served as vice president of the Board of Commissioners and chaired committees including Public Health & Safety.
