Willow Grove YMCA receives national award for co-producing the largest indoor event in Montco history

The YMCA National Gymnastics Championship & Invitational, held in Oaks in June, has been recognized as a 2024 Champion of Economic Impact in Sports Tourism by Sports Destination Management Magazine.

The event was produced by the Willow Grove YMCA in cooperation with Valley Forge Sports, The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center, and Villanova University. The four-to-five-day tournament is an annual, season culminating competition and drew roughly 1,900 gymnasts from 81 YMCAs, 6,000 total room nights, and a total economic impact of $7 million, making it the largest indoor event ever held in Montgomery County, according to a press release.

From the award’s description:

This was the largest indoor sporting event ever hosted in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. 81 YMCAs across the country were represented, generating record participation and spectatorship, and highlighting Valley Forge’s national appeal as a sports destination. Special Olympians were also included in the event for the first time ever in the Y’s history. Utilizing the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center and Villanova University provided two unique venues to enjoy. This event was a win both on and off the mat.

“The 2024 YMCA National Gymnastics Championships & Invitational is not just an event; it’s a culmination of hard work, dedication, and the spirit of community. This championship highlighted the incredible talents of young gymnasts from across the nation,” Mubarak “Mo” Simmons, gymnastics director at Willow Grove YMCA, said in a statement. “Hosting this significant event in Montgomery County and working alongside Valley Forge Sports has been a remarkable experience. Their support has been instrumental in bringing this event to life, and we were thrilled to showcase the athletic excellence and supportive community that defines the YMCA in such a dynamic setting.”

“With this event, we were able to bring impact to different parts of the county, partner with local businesses, and create broad economic impact,” Dailey said. “The Willow Grove Y came to us with this opportunity, and we were thrilled to jump on board and help make it the best event it could be.”
