Michael J. Petrocik, 72, of the 2200 block of Oakdale Avenue in Glenside, has been convicted of homicide by vehicle while DUI. A judge increased his bail from $20,000 to $95,000 cash as he was taken into custody to await sentencing later this year.
Petrocik was operating his vehicle at an “excessive speed” while under the influence of medically-prescribed Valium and marijuana when he struck and killed Mary Duffy, 61, on a sidewalk in the 3000 block of Philmont Avenue in Huntingdon Valley in December 2021.
The plaintiff’s lawyer argued that Petrocik didn’t brake or try to evade the victim based on video footage captured by a local business, and that his actions were “consistent with impairment.”
According to The Reporter, the three-day trial ended with a judge also convicting Petrocik of several traffic offenses including careless and reckless driving, driving at unsafe speeds and disregarding traffic lanes.
Petrocik did not testify during the trial.
