The Upper Moreland Township Police Department announced that its Traffic Safety Unit has stopped over 340 cars for speeding in school zones since the beginning of the academic year.
According to the department, over 400 additional citations have additionally been filed for drivers that failed to stop for school buses while they were loading or unloading children.
The Upper Moreland School District joined the BusPatrol program in January 2023.
“Both of these violations result in heavy fines and penalties to the vehicle driver or registered owner,” the department said in a post.
The Traffic Safety Unit offers the following reminders:
- When a bus is stopped and the red lights are activated, EVERYONE MUST STOP. That means in all directions, regardless of how many lanes of travel there are in each direction.
- Both directions of traffic must stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk. We see this issue often on York Road by Sampson Avenue in the morning and afternoons while students are walking to and from school. All lanes of traffic should stop until the pedestrian is safely on the sidewalk.
- SLOW DOWN to 15 miles per hour when school zone lights are activated. We know – it feels like a crawl!
