Upper Moreland HS investigating racial slurs found by Cheltenham HS basketball team

The Upper Moreland Township School District is investigating a racial incident from Tuesday night’s boys basketball game against Cheltenham High School.

CHS players found a racial slur and “inappropriate images” written on a locker room whiteboard when they arrived at Upper Moreland High School.

“The n-word was written on a dry-erase board in the visitors’ team room,” Brian Scriven, the superintendent of the Cheltenham School District, said in a Wednesday letter.

Scriven said the incident was immediately reported by Patrick Fleury, Cheltenham’s athletic director and varsity boys’ basketball coach. CHS’s principal “apologized and immediately committed to investigating how this terrible incident occurred,” Scriven wrote.

Upper Moreland Superintendent Susan Elliott addressed parents and students in a Wednesday letter as well.

The incident comes less than two weeks after an Upper Moreland board member’s race and gender comments made national news.
