The Pennsylvania Department of Conversation and Natural Resources announced that the Commonwealth has made a grant in the amount of $150,000.00 to Cheltenham Township.

The funds will be utilized to construct a three-quarter mile segment of the Tookany Creek Trail at the Gimbel Field between Harrison Avenue and New Second Street.  The trail will be ten-feet wide in this area.

This grant “will help [Cheltenham Township]…link natural resources to community revitalization and improve well-being for residents by increasing recreation opportunities in…[Montgomery] County,” according to the Commonwealth.

“Local parks and trails improve the everyday lives of people of all places, ages, and backgrounds, while serving as a primary venue for outdoor recreation for Pennsylvanians,” stated Ms. Cindy Adams, Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.  “We are happy to assist these communities in Montgomery County create spaces where people can walk a trail, play outdoors, and enjoy nature close-to-home.”

According to the Commonwealth, “other partners in the project are the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.”

Gimbel Field is part of the Tookany Creek Park.  The land was acquired by Cheltenham Township in 1965, according to the municipality, “expressly for the development of Little League programs in the Township.  Named for Mr. Ellis Gimbel, a front-runner in organizing field improvements for the Old York Road Little League, which has merged with the Cheltenham Athletic Association to form the Cheltenham Little League.”
