Today in History with Chuck: Phillies legend inducted into MLB Hall of Fame, holds state record with his brothers and the Mansells of Cheltenham High

Today Richie “Dick” Allen, the late Philadelphia Phillies slugger, will join 1964 Cheltenham High School graduate Reggie “Mr. October” Jackson in the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

According to local historian Chuck Langerman, Cheltenham High and Wampum High School in western Pennsylvania (Allen’s alma mater) are the only known high schools in Pennsylvania state high school basketball history with three brothers who have all scored over 1,000 career points.

Pictured on the right above is 2005 Cheltenham High graduate Harris Mansell, the all-time leading boys’ basketball scorer in CHS history with 1,919 points. Harris played his college basketball at Rider University. His younger brother, Patrick, a 2006 Cheltenham graduate, finished his CHS career with 1,869 career points and played collegiately at Rider. Robert, the youngest brother and a 2010 CHS graduate, finished with 1,210 points and went on to play at Binghamton University in New York.

The first trio of brothers to score over 1,000 career points in Pennsylvania history were the Allen brothers. Dick Allen scored 1,931 career points and led the team to the small school state title in 1958. Dick Allen’s older brother, Hank, scored 1,259 points, while younger brother Ron Allen tallied 1,195 career points.

All three Allen brothers played Major League Baseball.

Fun Fact: Dr. Robert Mansell, a resident of Laverock and owner of Robert J. Mansell Dental in Abington Township, is the Cheltenham trio’s father.
