Throwback Thursday: Overlook School, Abington

The above photo comes from the October 16, 1950 issue of Life magazine entitled “New Schools”. The article examines the new direction of school construction in post-war America. One of the examples it spotlights is Overlook School in Abington and its circular classrooms.

According to the caption, the circular classrooms “eliminate useless corners. Children love the resulting flexibility of shape and move their furniture around in new arrangements every day.”

One of those children happen to be Jenkintown resident Jane Michener Kroll seen outside looking in. Jane told us some time ago that she was featured in an issue of Life when she was in fourth grade at the time.

Thankfully, Google scanned the entire archive of Life and makes it available at books.google.com.

The photo below shows the school as it looks today.
