In the summer of 1974, Jenkintown’s centennial celebration was in full swing and everyone turned out for the parade which actually ran down York Road. Today, PennDOT would never allow such a thing.

The video shows a scene with Woolworth’s, Oswald’s Pharmacy, and other stores in what was once a vibrant retail district until PennDOT removed the parking spaces.

The film comes to us courtesy of the late Claire Eccarius, who filmed the event, which also briefly shows her husband at the end marching with the Chorus of Old York Road. The family converted this and many other reels of home movies to digital video in 2006.
