Throwback Thursday: Glenside Station, Past, Present, and Future(?)

We now know it as the home of Elcy’s Cafe, the current Glenside Station has stood in service of rail passengers since 1873. One of the major changes in all that time is the loss of the tower, a characteristic similar to the Elkins Park station.

In 2004, SEPTA proposed a rather radical change. Pictured below is the new station with retail and a parking garage it planned to build int its place. In a gesture to preservationists, SEPTA would pick up and move the current building to a spot further back.

SEPTA’s proposed redevelopment of the Glenside train station in 2004.

After a hearing that year in which the agency and its architects took suggestions, the plan seemed to lose steam. Today, SEPTA focuses its local expansion efforts on replacing the Jenkintown station with something similar to what you’ll find in Ambler.

Present day.
