Local historian Chuck Langerman has highlighted the current professional statuses of three Cheltenham High School alumni.
Shayla Johnson (above left)
Shayla Johnson, a 2000 graduate, is currently the Assistant Athletic Director for Business Operations at Penn State Abington.
Johnson has financial oversight of the department’s budget, including for its 13 NCAA Division III intercollegiate teams, student wage payroll, and part-time coach appointments. Other duties include sports oversight, compliance assistance, game day administration, and the department’s Senior Woman Administrator.
Johnson first came to Penn State Abington as the head women’s basketball coach. She notched 47 wins during her coaching tenure there and led the Nittany Lions to the conference playoffs three times, including two semifinal appearances.
She was a four-year scholarship basketball player at the University of Rhode Island where she earned her B.A. degree in communications. She later received her master’s in sport administration from Lock Haven University.
At Cheltenham High School, Johnson was a major part of the Lady Panthers’ PIAA state basketball championship in 2000, the first team championship in school history.
Kevin W. Hartman (above middle)
Kevin W. Hartman, a 2008 graduate, is currently serving as an Associate Pastor at Kingdom Empowerment Ministries in Germantown.
Hartman has been in ministry for nearly a decade. His journey started at Lovely Baptist Church in South Philadelphia where he served in various capacities, including as a Youth Leader, an Associate Minister and an Interim Pastor.
Hartman also works full-time as a financial processor at Vanguard in Malvern. He holds an Associate of Arts degree in Communications from Montgomery County College and attended classes at Palmer Theological Seminary in Wayne, Pennsylvania.
Ilene Chaiken (above right)
Ilene Chaiken (left), a 1975 graduate, is a writer/executive producer at NBC.
According to Langerman, Universal TV has acquired rights to internationally bestselling author Liza Palmer’s (right) latest book “Family Reservations,” which it will develop with Chaiken.

Chaiken is best known as the co-creator, writer, and executive producer on the Showtime television series “The L Word,” and was recently an executive producer on “Empire,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and “Law & Order: Organized Crime.”
The Elkins Park native studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and graduated there with a degree in graphic design in 1979.
