Summer reminder: Agencies warn against leaving pets in hot cars

With warmer temperatures on their way to greater Glenside and elsewhere, PETA has pointed out that 14 dogs and other companion animals have reportedly died from heat-related causes in 2024.

“In 2023 alone, 163 animals endured heat–related deaths and another 855 were rescued from the heat—and those are just the ones that were reported,” the agency said.

“Even if it’s just for a moment, and even if the windows are cracked—it is never safe to leave an animal in a parked vehicle alone,” the ASPCA said.

Local police departments encourage residents to call 911 if they spot an animal left in a car on a hot day.

In 2018, former Governor Tom Wolf enacted the “Hot Car Bill”, intended to provide protection for police and emergency responders when an animal is removed from a car.
