Staff member at Cheltenham Elementary tested positive for COVID-19

Over the weekend, Cheltenham School District announced that a staff member of Cheltenham Elementary School had tested positive for COVID-19. The school is currently operating virtually, with the exception of special education students and those learning English taking classes at the school.

In a message to district families, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Wagner Marseille provided details on the response and the protocols undertaken. It was also deemed safe for the students who are taking classes at school and the staff to return.

Below is the note from the district:

Dear Cheltenham School District Families and Staff,

This afternoon, CSD administration became aware a Cheltenham Elementary School facilities staff member had confirmed positive for COVID-19. Per CDC guidelines, the staff member will isolate for 10 days before returning to work. Per CSD’s health and safety plan, the district’s certified school nurse contacted the Montgomery County Department of Public Health and has assisted us throughout this ongoing process.

As we’ve done since schools shut down on March 9, CES classrooms have been cleaned, vented and disinfected at levels which exceed health department guidelines. In consultation with the health department, the district has deemed the building safe for the return of special education and English language learners students and staff on Monday, Oct. 26. We are able to open the building Monday because the staff member observed social distancing rules and wore a mask while in the building, and was in classrooms only after students and staff left the building on Thursday, Oct. 22. They were not in the building on Friday, Oct. 23.

In the two days prior to feeling symptoms, the staff member was within six feet of three facilities staff members for more than 15 minutes. Though wearing masks, those staff members will be recommended to be tested and are required to quarantine for 14 days, as per the district’s health and safety plan.

The health, safety and well-being of our school community remains a top priority. We are following sound protocols aligned with expert health guidance to ensure we are doing everything we can to protect the health of all students and staff. We also want to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the importance of wearing masks, staying six feet apart from others, and regularly washing your hands.

Please know we are here to support the community. We appreciate your collaboration and support as we work together to mitigate risks. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at 215-881-6300 or wmarseille@cheltenham.org.

As always, we will continue to keep you informed. Stay safe and healthy.

Sincerely,

Dr. Wagner Marseille
Superintendent of Schools
