Son of late Sen. Stewart Greenleaf objects to district judge candidate’s use of his father’s opinion

The Reporter recently published a Letter to the Editor courtesy of Stewart Greenleaf, Jr., who claims that Melissa Osborne, candidate for magisterial district judge in Upper Moreland, Lower Moreland and Bryn Athyn, used a misleading campaign poster during the May 16 primary election.

According to Greenleaf, Jr., the poster “falsely suggested my late father, Senator Stewart Greenleaf, would have endorsed her over former State Representative Tom Murt simply because Ms. Osborne is a lawyer.”

The note continues: “My father never endorsed Ms. Osborne. Her insinuation otherwise is dishonest. Taking advantage of my father’s passing so he cannot rebut her misleading claim is unconscionable.”

Greenleaf, Jr. ran for election to the Pennsylvania State Senate District 12 in 2018. He lost to Maria Collett in the general election and took similar issue with her campaign.

He previously served as Montgomery County Controller from 2012 to 2016.

Greenleaf, Jr., who lives in Willow Grove, is the son of Senator Greenleaf, who grew up in Upper Moreland. The longtime state senator served the area for 40 years through multiple appointments, including chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Greenleaf passed away in February 2021 at age 81. He had a vital interchange of the Pennsylvania Turnpike named after him in April. Route 611 in Upper Moreland Township (Exit 343) is now known as the “Senator Stewart J. Greenleaf Sr. Interchange.”
