Son of La Salle College High School head coach to start at quarterback this season as Explorers look to defend state title

Luke Gordon, a junior at La Salle College High School in Wyndmoor and the son of head coach Brett Gordon, will be the Explorers’ starting quarterback this season, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The nod brings the family into their third generation of varsity football at La Salle. Former head coach Drew Gordon, a Glenside native who passed away in September 2023, was an offensive coordinator while his son Brett played. His teams won five league titles and four straight District 12 championships during nine seasons as head coach.

Both Brett and Drew played quarterback for Villanova University.

“He’s put in the work,” Brett Gordon told The Inquirer about his son. “The way the timing and transition has taken place for him, having an opportunity to come to La Salle, get his feet under him. He works hard in the classroom. He’s waited his turn, had some opportunities to get in a little bit last year. He’s chomping at the bit to get out and prove what he can do.”

In January, Brett was named the Easternpafootball.com Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.

In December, the Explorers brought home the PIAA state championship after defeating District 7 champ Pittsburgh Central Catholic 34-20 at Cumberland Valley High School.

Coach Gordon, 46, was hired in 2024 and is a 1998 La Salle College graduate. He was as an assistant coach at the school for 14 years (2005-2014, 2016-2019).

La Salle won its only other PIAA state football championship in 2009 with Drew as their head coach and Brett as their offensive coordinator.

According to The Philadelphia Inquirer’s coverage, they are the only father-son duo to win state championships as head coaches in the 36-year history of the PIAA football state playoffs.
