Fire Companies from Jenkintown, Elkins Park, Abington, and Weldon responded to a report of smoke seeping up from the basement of the Borough Brewhouse.
The response caused a massive backup on York Road as police diverted traffic at West Avenue and at Washington Lane.
According to Ken Lynch, Chief of Independent Fire company, the source of the smoke came from a lit cigarette tossed onto the sidewalk at the base of the ramp outside of the Brewhouse. It rolled into a crevice between the sidewalk and the building, causing a strip of wood beneath the stucco to smolder.

As if you need another reason to hate cigarettes.
Firefighters chipped away at the stucco and sidewalk to expose the wood, dousing it with water.
There was no serious damage to either the Brewhouse or the Hiway Theater.
The Brewhouse and the Theater will be open as usual tonight.
