Sisters of St. Basil the Great win Lumen Christi Award, Jenkintown’s UECC to host ceremony

The local Ukrainian community will gather at an awards ceremony on Thursday, February 22 at 6:00pm at the Ukrainian Education and Cultural Center (UECC), 700 N Cedar Road, Jenkintown.

The ceremony marks two years since Russia invaded Ukraine.

During the event, the Catholic Extension Society will present the Sisters of the Order of St. Basil the Great with the Lumen Christi Award––the organization’s highest honor––for the sisters’ work in helping war victims both in the United States and abroad.

The award comes with a $25,000 grant, along with an additional $25,000 grant for the nominating diocese.

“As you may have heard, the Sisters of St. Basil the Great were recently named as the winner of Catholic Extension Society’s 2023-2024 Lumen Christi Award for their work in helping war victims in Ukraine and the United States,” St. Basil’s website says. “This is a huge honor, and a surprise, from one of the most important American Catholic foundations.”

Archbishop Borys Gudziak, Archbishop of Philadelphia of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church,             Sisters of the Order of St. Basil the Great, who serve in Ukraine and Jenkintown, and Father Jack Wall, President of Catholic Extension Society, will all be in attendance.
