Giant Food Stores has a very special new employee. He’s slim, got big eyes, never speaks or takes a break, and is named Marty. And Marty is a robot.

According the the Washington Post, Giant has deployed its new robot in at least 172 locations, and locally you can find him roaming the Giants in Willow Grove and Roslyn.

We asked one of Marty’s fleshier co-workers for an opinion of the new employee, and it didn’t look like the roving gray monolith would receive an invite for a drink after work any time soon. Then again, this is only version 1.0.

The reactions to Marty from customers vary from mild amusement to sheer terror — especially from children. Most customers we saw this morning didn’t pay Marty much attention.

Marty’s main job is to patrol the store and look for safety hazards, such as spills or tripping hazards. He doesn’t talk or respond to questions, but he is always on the job.
