Richard “Dick” Schaphorst, a longtime resident and active member of the Jenkintown community, passed away on Wednesday, August 28 at Cathedral Village, a retirement community in Philadelphia. He was 94 years old.
According to his obituary, Mr. Schaphorst raised his children in Jenkintown with his late wife, Patricia Smedick. During his 43 years as a resident in the borough, he served on the Jenkintown School Board for eight years, including one term as Vice President, and served as Rector’s Warden at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Glenside.
He was also the president of the Jenkintown Rotary Club from 2004-2005, a member of the Jenkintown Planning Commission, and coached Jenkintown Youth Activities baseball.
Mr. Schaphorst founded Delta Information Systems in 1979. The company had grown to more than 60 employees when he retired in 1999.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 28 at 2:00pm in Cathedral Village’s Cathedral Hall, 600 Cathedral Rd., Philadelphia. Donations in memory of Richard Schaphorst may be made to Lehigh University via the Online portal at https://alumni.lehigh.edu/lehigh-fund.
