Representative Madeleine Dean of Glenside pressed Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick at a House hearing about trade deficits and the uncertainty President Trump’s tariff plan has caused since its rollout in April, CBS News reported today.
Dean brought up Walmart increasing the price of bananas amid the administration’s tariffs, CBS said.
Earlier today, Dean posted the following on social media:
Never thought as a former writing professor, I would be giving economics lessons to the Commerce Secretary, but here we are.
Trump’s chaotic tariffs are rooted in an arbitrary fear of a trade deficit, but a trade deficit means Americans are buying goods — a sign of financial security.
I reminded Mr. Lutnick that the last time we had a trade surplus was during the Great Depression — let’s not go back there.

Dean, who serves as a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, also appeared on MSNBC today to discuss her thoughts on President Trump’s latest travel ban.
