Planned propane tank flare off scheduled for April 7 at SPS Technologies, Fire Marshal says

Abington Township announced today that Fire Marshal Chris Platz has been notified of a planned propane tank flare off at the SPS Technologies facility in Jenkintown on Monday, April 7 from approximately 10:00am – 2:00pm.

According to the announcement, a flare off is “a controlled burning of high vapor pressure liquid or compressed gas in order to reduce or control the pressure and/or dispose of the product.” The operation is being conducted by a licensed propane supply company in coordination with the Abington Township Fire Marshal.

Platz said residents can expect to a see a flame coming from a remote area on the property “from a piece of equipment designed for this purpose. You may also hear loud noises during this operation as well. This is a normal operation that propane companies conduct regularly and should not be a cause for concern.”

The flare off is intended to remove an existing onsite propane tank located approximately 75 feet from the building, Platz said.
