Pioneer Fire Company #1 of Jenkintown names Firefighter of the Year for 2024, La Salle College High School names Distinguished Lasallian Educator of the Year

Pioneer Fire Company #1 of Jenkintown announced today that firefighter Liam Casey has been named the 2024 recipient of the Eric R. Feltyberger Firefighter of the Year award.

According to their announcement, the award is “given annually to a firefighter for their contributions of service to the company, department, and community” and is named in honor of Lieutenant Eric Feltyberger, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 43 after many years of service.

Casey, who joined the junior program as a 14-year-old, also received the award in 2018. In 2023, Casey was highlighted by the Jenkintown Fire Department.


In related news, La Salle College High School of Wyndmoor named Mr. Owen Schugsta the Distinguished Lasallian Educator of the Year.

According to the announcement, the recognition honors a faculty member whose life and work exemplify the charism of Saint John Baptist de La Salle. It continues:

Mr. Schugsta has served in Lasallian education for fifteen years, including twelve years at La Salle College High School. A dynamic and faith-filled educator, he is recognized not only for his deep theological knowledge and classroom excellence but also for the compassionate leadership and humble service that define his vocation.

As Chair of the Religion Department, Mr. Schugsta has guided a curriculum rooted in Catholic social teaching and Lasallian spirituality, helping young men discern meaning, purpose, and faith in their daily lives. His students and colleagues alike describe him as a teacher of both intellect and heart—one who sets high expectations, encourages curiosity, and fosters a culture of respect and belonging.
