Calvin Yim, 29, of Philadelphia, pleaded no contest to assaulting a Cheltenham Township police officer in April 2023, Mainline Media News reported.
Yim’s plea claims that he was suffering from mental illness at the time and had no memory of the assault, Mainline Media said. He faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 to 20 years in prison on the felony charge.
An investigation began on the morning of April 22, 2023, when Cheltenham police responded to a report of a suspicious male in the area. Police located Yim in the 500 block of Bridle Road, and body cam footage revealed that that the officer exited his patrol car, and asked Yim to sit down to talk.
Yim responded “No” and immediately punched the officer in the face and head and attempted to grab the officer’s service revolver. According to the story, the officer’s service weapon ultimately discharged during the struggle and a bullet struck and wounded Yim in the shoulder.
Yim ran into the nearby woods and was quickly apprehended by Cheltenham police. He was treated at Abington Memorial Hospital for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
The officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries to his head and face, Mainline Media said.
