Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity, 60, a retired U.S. Army colonel and former corporate executive, is “seriously considering” a run for governor in 2026, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported today.
According to the story, Republicans are hoping Garrity can challenge Governor Josh Shapiro next year, noting that she replaced him as Pennsylvania’s top vote-getter in history when she won reelection in 2024.
As of late, the Athens resident “has teased a bid for the governor’s mansion on social media and in interviews, culminating in a speech she gave last weekend to the Pennsylvania Leadership Conference in Harrisburg.”
“The Keystone State sent President Trump back to the White House, [former U.S. Sen.] Bob Casey back to Scranton, elected a Republican attorney general for the first time in over a decade,” Garrity said during the speech. “And next November, the Keystone State will send a Republican to the governor’s mansion.”
Other potential GOP candidates include Representative Dan Meuser, State Senator Scott Martin, and State Senator Doug Mastriano, The Inquirer said. Garrity was chosen as a frontrunner in the Pennsylvania Leadership Conference’s annual straw poll.
During her tenure, Garrity “has maintained a friendly working relationship with Shapiro, while remaining a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump. Over the years, Garrity, one of the only women serving statewide, has risen as a party leader in Pennsylvania.”
Her election would make her Pennsylvania’s first female governor.
“I get it—State Treasurer isn’t the sexiest job in the world. But it’s important,” she posted on Monday. “I’m the top fiscal watchdog for PA, overseeing $170B in assets, $4.5B in unclaimed property, PA 529s, ABLE accounts—and more. It’s your money. I protect it.”
