Glenside

Age 62

19582021

Robert Joseph Atwell, Jr. (Bob) age 62 of Glenside, PA formerly of Philadelphia, passed away tragically on September 3, 2021.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, Bob was the son of the late Robert J. Atwell, Sr., and Evelyn V. Atwell (Calhoun) of Horsham. Growing up in the Incarnation of Our Lord Parish, he attended church and grade school there, then graduated from Cardinal Dougherty High School.

Starting at age 16, Bob began working as a groundskeeper for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia at New Cathedral Cemetery in Philadelphia, then continued his career at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Cheltenham, PA as an assistant superintendent until his death. Throughout his time working, he developed a deep respect and compassion for those grieving the loss of loved ones.

With a strong passion for art, music, and life, Bob viewed beauty in his surroundings, making a habit of sharing what he captured in his many photographs. A true audiophile, his collection of music allowed him to enjoy the songs he listened to with others, making sure to extend that pleasure to them. He later discovered another way of sharing his passion of music; attending concerts frequently, bringing guests along for them to experience it alongside him.

Bob will certainly be remembered for his love of family and friends. He invested the gift of time cultivating relationships, supporting those in need, and reminding us that we were always in his thoughts. He made friends easily and knew how to stay connected for decades. He had a strong faith, nor was he shy about sharing what he believed—especially the power of love and kindness.

Bob is survived by his mother, Evelyn (Calhoun) Atwell, his sisters and brothers, Evelyn Joann (Jim) Cousin, Hazel (Sid) Shusterman, Tom (Mary) Stearne, Bill (Beth), Susan (Fran) Oscilowski, Karen (Al) Marenbach, Teresa (Michael) O’Rourke, David (Larissa), Ryan, Maureen (Jeff) Brinsfield. Bob is also survived by 47 nieces and nephews, 42 great nieces and nephews and 1 great-great nephew as well as a host of family and friends.

Family and friends are invited to visit from 9:45 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 321 Witmer Road, Horsham, PA, where a Memorial Mass will take place at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be private.
