Cheltenham Township has a new traffic garden at Thomas Williams Park (136 Hewett Road, Wyncote).
According to township officials, the space “is meant to be a safe and fun place for kids to practice traffic safety while walking or using bikes.”
David Genova, division director of health promotion for the Montgomery County Department of Public Health, said funding for the project came through a $21,750 PennDOT grant. Laura Williamson, community traffic safety coordinator for Montgomery County, coordinated with Cheltenham Township to bring it all together.
“Laura was the lifeblood of the project. The idea was based on traffic safety crash data in Montgomery County,” Genova said. “Laura and her team outlined the traffic garden in sidewalk chalk, and Cheltenham followed up with painting.”
A ribbon cutting with food and drink vendors will take place at 4:00pm on Sunday, June 7. Representatives from Montgomery County and YJR Outdoors will provide bike helmet giveaways and activities. Kids can bring their bikes or borrow a bike to ride in the space.
