Mr. Roy ‘Butch’ Thomas, former Deputy Chief of Enterprise Fire Company, superintendent of the Hatboro Public Works Department, has passed away

Mr. Roy “Butch” Thomas, a lifelong resident of Hatboro, former Deputy Chief of the Enterprise Fire Company, and former superintendent of the Hatboro Public Works Department, passed away on Tuesday, April 15 after a long illness.

Born in Abington, Mr. Thomas grew up in auto racing, starting at a young age with quarter midget cars, his obituary said. As a teenager, he raced dragsters that he and his father built and worked on, which led him to work in the family business, Thomas’ Auto Repair. He was later a mechanic at Read’s Van Service in Hatboro in the 1980s and began working at the Hatboro Public Works Department in the early 1990s, eventually becoming superintendent.

In 1969, Mr. Thomas joined the Enterprise Fire Company of Hatboro, later reaching the rank of Deputy Chief and going on to become a Life Member. He also served as the assistant Hatboro Fire Marshal, a role he held until his retirement.

He joined the W.K. Bray Masonic Lodge in Hatboro, becoming a Master Mason on November 15, 2014.

“Butch was a beloved member of our community and impacted the lives of so many residents, employees, and business owners throughout his lifetime. He loved Hatboro just as much as Hatboro loved him and worked tirelessly to give back to our small town however he could,” borough officials said in a post. “Please join Borough Council, Mayor Schultz, and Borough Staff in remembering Butch and sending our condolences to his wife Janice and his family.”

Relatives and friends will be received by his family on Friday, April 25 after 10:30am in Schneider Funeral Home, 431 N. York Road, Hatboro and are invited to attend his Masonic Service at 12:00pm followed by his Memorial Service. His interment will be private.
