Mr. Robert C. McCreary, a longtime health and physical education teacher in the Springfield School District and a former standout athlete for Cheltenham High School, passed away on Thursday, May 21. He was 94 years old.
A Dresher resident and former resident of Glenside, Mr. McCreary was an accomplished wrestling and baseball coach for the Spartans, according to his obituary. He won a league championship and earned Coach of the Year honors during his time at Springfield High.
As a Panther, he wrestled for legendary coach “Wilbur “Dutch” Lehman, captaining the team his senior season and winning two District championships. After graduating from Cheltenham High School in 1950, he went on to Temple University and starred on the wrestling mat and baseball field. He later coached baseball and wrestling at Temple and later coached wrestling at the University of Pennsylvania and Ursinus College.

An Army veteran, Mr. McCreary was part of baseball and wrestling All-Army Championship Teams while stationed at Fort McPherson in Georgia, his obituary said.
McCreary was also an official at the high school and collegiate levels for more than 20 years. In 2006, he was inducted into the Southeastern Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame.
