Mr. Joseph “Joe” Thomas Moore, a 2006 graduate of Cheltenham High School, public servant, and decorated Marine, passed away on August 28. He was 38.

Mr. Moore served 20 years with the US Marine Corps where he achieved the rank of Master Sergeant, his obituary said. He earned Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals and served as an Academy Class President.

Mr. Moore went on to serve 12 years in law enforcement across multiple agencies, including as an Aviation Logistics Planner for Marine Forces Pacific, a Watch Chief at the Pentagon, and a Police Officer and Criminal Investigator for multiple Pennsylvania communities. 

Mr. Moore was most recently serving as a deportation officer with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He died of a self-inflected gunshot wound while parked near the Center City headquarter, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported today.

According to The Washington Post, ICE told Mr. Moore in late August that he would be fired. His family has disputed the suicide ruling.

A service celebrating Mr. Moore’s life and honoring his service will be held on Friday, September 25, 2026, at Hope Community Church, located at 2732 N Charlotte St., Gilbertsville, PA 19525. A visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, followed by the funeral service at 12:00 PM.
