Mr. Henry Dougherty, Cheltenham High School graduate, Navy veteran, and longtime volunteer in Glenside, has passed away at 99

Mr. Henry J. Dougherty, a graduate of Cheltenham High School, Navy veteran, and longtime volunteer in Glenside, passed away on Thursday, July 2. He was 99.

Mr. Dougherty served in the Philippines during WWII and was trained as a Radio Communications Specialist. During his high school years, he played football and baseball, holding the program’s batting average record for many years, his obituary said.

Mr. Doughtery later moved to Glenside where he coached basketball and baseball for the Glenside Youth Athletic Club. He also served as a commissioner for American Legion Baseball and was a devout member of St. Luke’s the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Glenside, where he took on many volunteer positions.

He worked for Bell Telephone in Jenkintown for 42 years and raised 10 children with his wife, Joan Hanna, in Glenside.

Relatives and friends are invited to greet he family on Thursday, July 9, 2026 from 9:30 AM until his Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church, 2316 Fairhill Ave., Glenside, PA 19038. His interment will follow in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham.
