Mr. David Walter Koons, an Oreland native, 1970 graduate of Bishop McDevitt High School, and a longtime track coach and officiant, has passed away at 74

Mr. David Walter Koons, an Oreland native, 1970 graduate of Bishop McDevitt High School, and a longtime track and field coach and officiant, passed away on Friday, September 4. He was 74.

A track competitor during his days in Wyncote and a 1974 graduate of Lehigh University, Mr. Koons later returned to his high school alma mater as a coach and officiated for the Philadelphia Catholic League and the Penn Relays for many years, according to his obituary.

“Track and Field was a lifelong passion for Dave,” his obituary said. “He was a respected member of the track community, receiving numerous awards for his contributions to the sport.”

Professionally, Mr. Koons served the Social Security Administration for more than 30 years. He was also a longtime member, board member, and president of the Sandy Run Country Club in Oreland, his obituary said.

Visitation will be Thursday, October 8, 2026, 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM at Holy Martyrs Catholic Church, 120 Allison Road, Oreland, PA, where his Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 AM. 

A luncheon/celebration of life will follow the Mass at Sandy Run Country Club, 200 E. Valley Green Road, Oreland, PA.
