Mr. David F. Britt, a 1967 graduate of Bishop McDevitt High School in Wyncote (Cheltenham Township) and a U.S. Navy veteran, passed away peacefully on August 16 in Bradenton, Florida, after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 75 years old.
After graduating from Bishop McDevitt, Mr. Britt went on to earn a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Mexico in 1977, followed by an MS in Management from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1983, and an MA in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in 1997.
“His illustrious career in the U.S. Navy began with his enlistment in 1967, serving in the Submarine Service aboard the NR-1,” his obituary said. “Dave’s leadership qualities shone brightly, and he was commissioned as an Officer in 1977, later serving in the Surface Navy. He commanded the USS Kauffman FFG59 and the USS Vicksburg CG69 with distinction, earning the Bronze Star Medal in 2002 for his bravery and dedication to his country. Dave retired as a Captain in 2003, leaving behind a legacy of honor and respect within the military community.”
A memorial Mass will be held at 9:30 AM on Monday October 20, 2025, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 2850 75th St W, Bradenton, FL 34209. Inurnment will take place at 12:30 PM at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72, Sarasota, FL 34241.
