PennDOT continues to spend the hefty gas hike we’re paying on more roads and bridges. Its latest announcement brings a closure and detour to a stretch of Byberry Road over the Southampton Creek in Upper Moreland Township and begins on April 1 with completion sometime in July.

PennDOT’s contractor will rehabilitate the bridge by removing and resetting the masonry arch barrel, walls and barrier; excavating and replacing the arch backfill with lightweight concrete; and replacing existing concrete parapets with a stone masonry facing.

Due to the nature of construction, Byberry Road will be closed and detoured between Pioneer Road and Reading Way during the length of the rehabilitation project.

Beginning Monday, April 1, through mid-July, Byberry Road motorists will be directed to use Davisville Road, County Line Road and Route 232 (Huntingdon Pike). Local access will be maintained up to the construction zone.

Built in 1828, the Byberry Road Bridge over Southampton Creek is a double-span stone masonry arch structure which carries an average of 11,638 vehicles a day.

This structure is one of seven bridges in Philadelphia, Delaware and Montgomery counties that PennDOT is repairing under a $7,220,000 bridge improvement project.
