Moody Jones Gallery in Glenside to host closing reception for Phenomenal Women exhibit on June 29

The Moody Jones Gallery in Glenside will host a closing reception for their exhibition titled “Phenomenal Women” on Saturday, June 29 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm.

An opening reception was held on Saturday, June 1.

Inspired by an impactful legacy of the late Alma Thomas, the exhibition displays the elusive talents, unapologetic approach, and deliberate beauty of artists Anyta Thomas, Dawn Siler, and Yemonja Smalls. The show commemorates Thomas through the works of these women that embody and highlight key aspects of her legacy.

Utilizing abstract techniques, mixed media, and color theory, the artists hold the ability to connect with their audience on many levels.

Philadelphia native Anyta Thomas says the focus of her style and subject matter is “not only to create art with a story, but to create lasting memories of family and ancestry.” Anyta works primarily with mesh/wire creating sculptures using tools she designed herself to achieve her distinct style.

With a diverse start in video and music production at the Art Institute of Philadelphia, Dawn Siler came to appreciate painting as an outlet for intellectual and creative self- expression. She is also a Philadelphia native now living and working in Irving, Texas. Siler’s bold and colorful compositions “weave tales of universal and spiritual elements; constructs on her life’s journey.”

“I draw the core of a thing to the outside, asking the viewer to acknowledge how familiar it is to them although hidden; the cyclical nature of growth, which often includes breaking, mending and refining, is reflected in the blending of color in my work,” she said.

Currently working and residing in Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Yemonja Smalls is a mixed media whose practice is for the viewer with the use of color to see the underside of one’s soul.

“I never bothered painting the ugly things in life. I wanted something beautiful that you could sit down and look at,” Thomas said.

Visitors can expect a dynamic range of work; to be inspired and moved by the powerful narratives and artistic expression that celebrates resilience, creativity, and spirit.
