Montgomery County officials have released the latest numbers of positive test results. There are now been 431 positive test results. That number is up 27 since yesterday.

Here are the latest local numbers:

• Abington Township is at 35 positive cases, which is one more than yesterday
• Cheltenham Township is at 31 positive cases, which is one more than yesterday
• Jenkintown is at three positive cases, which is even with yesterday

One thing we want to clarify about these numbers. They reflect all of the positive test results. It has been 21 days since Montgomery County began announcing positive test results. We know five people have died. But what we do not know is if any of the earlier cases have recovered and are no longer deemed contagious.

How long does recovery take and for how long do you stay contagious? Can you get sick a second time? From John Hopkins Medicine:

Those with mild cases of COVID-19 appear to recover within one to two weeks. For severe cases, recovery may take six weeks or more.

Researchers don’t know yet whether reinfection can occur. Some patients continue to test positive for the virus for a while after their symptoms have gone away.

Because tests have found viral genetic material in patients after they’ve recovered from COVID-19, it is best to assume that you may be contagious for some time and take precautions to avoid infecting others.

So even if a patient with a positive test result no longer feels sick, they may still need to continue to isolate themselves, which makes them relevant to remain on the list.
