Montco SPCA’s new leaders vow to win back public trust

The Montgomery County SPCA has removed and/or replaced most of its top managers and board of directors, and has committed to spending more to fix up its facilities, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The changes came in the wake of an Inquirer investigation in September which revealed unsavory practices and more than $67 million in assets.

“It’s a mystery to me why it got to the point where it got,” the shelter’s new board president, Art Howe, told The Inquirer. “It’s absolutely time for a change, and we have made a lot of progress in the last four or five weeks.”

A Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office probe remains ongoing, key leadership positions remain unfilled, and six board members were appointed within recent weeks. A Facebook page called “Demand Change at Montgomery County SPCA” continues to document what goes on at the shelter. In November, the page reported that the Abington shelter was temporarily closed due to a black mold outbreak.

Howe said “he plans to improve the shelter’s low save rate for animals, hire experienced animal-welfare experts, and fix up the aging facilities,” The Inquirer wrote.
