MontCo officials, Madeleine Dean sit down in Abington to address hunger epidemic

A group of elected officials, advocates and community members met at Salem Baptist Church in Abington on Monday to discuss an “invisible issue”: hunger in the region.

The gathering saw 40 people in the pews discussing hunger with two county commissioners, a U.S. congresswoman, a pastor, representatives from a college in Montgomery County, and several leaders in the food-based nonprofit community.

Glenside native and U.S. Representative Madeleine Dean hosted the event, stressing the need to “work to end hunger.”

Major talking points included the pandemic’s exacerbating effects, rising inflation, and the increasing importance of community organizations, including food pantries and other non-profits, in addressing housing, hunger and malnutrition.
