Meet Matt, Kate & Allyson: New owners of The Weldon Soda Fountain in Glenside

Husband-and-wife Matt and Katelyn McKinley, along with Matt’s sister Allyson, took over The Weldon Soda Fountain on June 1.

The previous owners, Benny and Rachel, had been considering relocating to Michigan and wanted to find the right people to run the Glenside staple before making a final decision.

“My wife and I have been bringing our daughters into The Weldon for years, and I used to talk to Benny and Rachel about the business. Benny had reached out to us and asked if we’d like to take it over. We wrote the idea off originally, but it was such a great opportunity,” Matt said.

As residents of Abington Township and co-owners of Maureen’s Ice Cream & Desserts in Bethany Beach, Delaware, Matt and Kate bring with them years of experience in the industry.

Allyson, a former manager of an ice cream and coffee shop in Doylestown, said she wanted to be a part of it, too, and the deal was done.

The trio plans to keep things mostly the same and add a few new layers of their own to the menu.

“We’re still making all the ice cream flavors with the same recipes, and we’re working on new recipes as well. Kate has brought in a lot of local bakers to our store in Bethany Beach, and we’re hoping to do something similar here,” Matt said. “We took over the former staff and added a couple members. They’re really, really good and we get positive feedback about them all the time. They do a great job with their service.”

So far, so good.

“So far things have been going really well. Making ice cream is kind of a new thing, and I think we’ve taken to it pretty well,” he said. We really like the area a lot. We want to add to the community’s food and dining scene, and we’re glad to be a part of that.”

“People are always talkative and supportive with us. It’s been really nice,” he said.
