Jaeson Han taught computer science, math and research at Abington Senior High School for roughly 20 years.
In February 2024, he opened Indoor Golf Club in Fort Washington after experiencing what he called “something of a mid-life crisis.”
“I felt burnt out from teaching and didn’t want to be that guy who stayed in the field too long. I wanted to pursue business and get better at golf,” he said. “I was fortunate to be able to find a space and open. The beginning was shaky like any new business, but we’re now climbing out of the weeds and our membership is growing.”
A Dresher resident and a 1998 graduate of Cheltenham High School, Han said the facility features nine GolfZon bays, three instructors, an on-staff physical therapist, and “lots of training aids and tools”.
“The Golf Zone bays’ floors move. It’s a great teaching and feedback tool,” he said. “We’re always looking to upgrade for our members depending on what they want.”
New and experienced players are welcome. Members can book slots through the app, and anyone can book a lesson with the facility’s instructors.
Han said that while he doesn’t miss the day-to-day grind and the associated stresses of teaching, he fondly remembers the relationships.
“I miss my colleagues at Abington and the day-to-day student interactions. Even though the content is more or less the same thing ever year, the teaching isn’t because you always have new kids, especially those with personality,” he said. “I was a shy kid, so I always tried my best to connect with the shyer students. The material is important, but guiding them towards a better life was what I valued most.”
He noted that his performance as a Cheltenham High student led him to become a teacher.
“I actually did poorly in math as a student, but I knew I could do it. It was a personal challenge to go into a field where I could help others,” he said. I’m not great at golf, either, but I like trying to figure stuff out.”
Currently a PGA associate, Han’s next goal is to become a PGA of America member.
“In other words, a full-time teaching pro,” he said.
