Manor College hosts annual ‘Ukraine Dialogue’ to discuss Russia’s seizure of large nuclear power plant

Manor College in Jenkintown held its semi-annual “Ukraine Dialogue,” a discussion of critical issues affecting Ukraine, on Thursday, April 27 via Zoom.

This year’s forum examined Russia’s seizure of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), located in southeastern Ukraine and the largest plant in Europe.

Experts present at the forum said that Russia’s seizure has undermined global nuclear security and serves as a “wake-up call” to end energy dependence on Russia. CNN recently reported that the United States has sensitive nuclear technology at the plant and is warning Russia not to touch it.

From Manor College’s forum description:

Russia has taken Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia civilian nuclear power facility by force, kidnapped the plant’s director general, shelled the plant’s backup power line, and potentially lit the kindling of World War III. Russia has threatened use of nuclear force, which can take shape in many forms. This Ukraine Dialogue program will examine what fallout would occur if Russia, by neglect or intention, caused the plant to melt-down. Hear from our expert panel about what would be required to address and contain a nuclear incident.
