Man sentenced 20+ years for Elkins Park cigarette store robbery/stabbing

Avery A. Armknecht, 20, of Norristown has been sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for a 2021 robbery of the Mr. Cigarette store in the Elkins Park during which he stabbed and seriously wounded a 62-year-old female clerk.

Witnesses said that Armknecht held a knife to the victim’s neck and stabbed her in the chest before grabbing a $20 packaged tobacco product and fleeing the scene.

Officers found the victim “lying on the floor of the store with a large amount of blood underneath her.”

Armknecht pleaded guilty to felony charges of attempted homicide and robbery. The victim’s two-year-old grandchild and another employee of the store were present during the robbery.
