Sister Gloria Petrone, a Handmaid of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and former teacher at La Salle College High School in Wyndmoor, passed away on Wednesday, May 8, surrounded by her sisters, family and nurses at St. Joseph’s Villa in Flourtown, her obituary said. She was 82 years old.
According to LSCHS officials, Sister Gloria accompanied Ancilla Domini Academy seniors to La Salle College High School after their school closed in 1975. She served as Dean of Ancilla Domini and remained on the faculty at LSCHS for two more years, teaching biology, anatomy, and moderating the Congregation of Holy Cross.
She also taught at several schools in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, as well as schools in Miami and the Handmaids’ high school in Ireland.
“Gloria was a dynamic woman with a deep spirituality and a consuming compassion for those experiencing poverty,” her obituary said. “She was known and loved for her tremendous sense of humor. Gloria’s Fiat carried her through her final years as she navigated a cancer that continued to grow. In her final wishes, Gloria asked that when she died, there would be no crying – only dancing, singing and rejoicing with her.”
Sister Gloria Petrone’s Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, May 29 at 10:30am at Saint Joseph Villa.
