A team of students from Lower Moreland School District has been chosen as the regional winner of the PennDOT Innovations Challenge for District 6, PennDOT announced today.
The team was mentored by Nick Solomon and includes students Anna Akhobadze, Grace Joseph, Arwa Muneeruddin, and Josh Levinson.
The Challenge is a statewide competition for high school students which encourages them to develop innovative and strategic solutions to real-world transportation challenges. This year, students were asked to develop a cost-effective, innovative solution to help PennDOT increase awareness for seatbelt safety and change driver behavior to improve roadway safety.
The team also launched a social media campaign and partner with gas stations, current software safety applications, and health organizations to help promote seatbelt safety, PennDOT said.
Challenge winners receive a combined total of $6,000 and will be invited to present their solutions to the PennDOT Secretary and a panel of judges in April, when a statewide winner will be determined.
