Low positive test results over the holiday weekend. Hospitalizations continue to drop

Montgomery County officials announced today during a press conference that there were 54 new positive cases of Coronavirus on Sunday, 39 on Monday, and 22 today. For those three days, 16 of the new cases are from long-term care facilities. The new overall total for cases in the county is 6,546.

It was a holiday weekend, so it will be interesting to see if the numbers go back to averaging about 100 positive tests per day later this week.

The total number of deaths confirmed due to Coronavirus is now 596. Deaths connected to long-term care facilities represent 520 of the 596 deaths or 87%. The number of probable deaths, those without a lab test to confirm, is 186.

The 14-day total of positive tests is 1,290 with a daily average of 92 based on the county’s data. The goal to reach phase yellow set by the governor is to have a 14-day daily average of 30. The county is currently off that pace by 62. Please note that Governor Wolf announced after the county press conference on Friday that Montgomery County will likely move to the yellow phase of reopening on June 5th.

The local data is as follows:

  • Abington Township is at 446, which is five more than Saturday
    • There have been 48 overall deaths in Abington
  • Cheltenham Township is at 465, which is four more than Saturday
    • There have been 35 deaths overall in Cheltenham
  • Jenkintown is at 28, which is the same as Saturday
    • There have been zero deaths in Jenkintown

Hospitalizations due to Coronavirus has dropped by about 40 since last week. The total is now 210 and 23% require a ventilator. Several weeks ago the number of patients topped 400.

In regards to long-term care facilities, 94 facilities report that 1,822 residents and 569 staff members have tested positive for Coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

The county’s testing sites have test 6,761 people between April 16th and May 21st. Results are in for 6,520 and 921 have tested positive. Over the past 30 days 14% have tested positive.
