Legacy Park Battle of the Bands fundraiser scheduled for June 24 in Jenkintown

The Jenkintown Education Foundation will host the Legacy Park Battle of the Bands on Tuesday, June 24 from 5:45pm – 8:30pm at 703 Greenwood Avenue in Jenkintown.

The free show includes an option to vote for a band of your choice. All proceeds will go directly to the Legacy Park fundraising campaign.

In January, the Jenkintown School Board of Directors approved the construction of a new playground named Legacy Park. Officials said it will replace the Jenkintown Community Playground castle, which is slated to be dismantled over the next 1-2 years. Jenkintown officials sent a memo in early September 2024 announcing that three areas of the castle were identified as unsafe.

In late May, the Legacy Park Community Board released the following statement:

Dear Community Members,
As we, the Legacy Park Community Board (in collaboration with the School District, Borough, community groups, and School Board) continue to plan for the exciting transformation of Legacy Park, we want to provide you with some important details about the project. After being created with extensive community input, much of the early conversation has focused on the replacement of the beloved “castle” playground, we want to emphasize that the scope of this initiative is much broader and more impactful.

Project Scope Beyond the Playground

The schematic plans now available outline that this project is updating the entire space behind the elementary school—not just the current site of the castle. Key elements of the project include:

  • Running new conduit for electrical and lighting needs
  • Regrading the property to help with visibility, site flow & accessibility, as well as stormwater drainage
  • Water management systems to facilitate proper drainage and lasting sustainability
  •  ·Updated security fencing and surveillance cameras for safety
  • Expanded pedestrian pathways
  • New hardscaping and landscaping that is low maintenance, sustainable, and beautiful
  • community pavilion for events, gatherings, and shade
  • And, of course, modern, inclusive playground equipment

 Budget and Timeline Transparency

We understand the community’s interest in knowing the total projected budget for this project. The project in total is very ambitious and the timelines will be dictated by the feasibility studies and the budget. However, a firm estimate will not be available until we receive the full site assessment and cost projections from our civil engineer and design partners, which we anticipate by August 2025. Obtaining a complete understanding of the physical, environmental, and structural needs of the site is a necessary step before committing to final numbers. Until then, all estimated costs remain preliminary.
