Lady Panthers basketball off to a 5-0 start | Cheltenham hosts 7th annual Hackathon with professional game designer/writer/alum serving as judge

The Cheltenham High School girls’ basketball team is now 5-0 in the Suburban One League Freedom Division following a 59-50 win over West Chester East in a non-league game on Saturday, January 18 in Wyncote.

Jiah Price scored a game-high 20 points and Zoe Thompson (pictured above) recorded a double-double of 14 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Lady Panthers, who are looking for their first league championship since 2012, which was legendary coach Bob Schaefer’s last season of his 31-year career.

The girls will next host Lower Moreland on Tuesday in a Freedom Division contest.

In related news, Cheltenham High School and Cedarbrook Middle School hosted the seventh annual Hack the Ham Hackathon last weekend.

Students were given 48 hours to make a game, website, or app about food. More than 50 students coded in GameMaker, JavaScript, Python, Unity, C#, and Scratch.

Junior London Montague’s winning project highlighted the variety of foods grown in the United States, with recipes, images, and strong user interface and experience. Funding for this year’s hackathon was provided by Proper Sky, an IT company in Abington. Guest speakers included alumni Natalie Doebley (‘22), Griffin O’Connor (‘24) and Seth Bernstein (‘21).

Richard Dansky, a 1988 Cheltenham High graduate and professional game designer/writer (pictured above), was invited by former classmate Sarah Putterman to serve as a judge.

Dansky is a 25-year veteran of the video game industry and has written for franchises including Tom Clancy’s The Division, Assassin’s Creed, and many more. He has also published eight novels and short short story collections and has written and designed for over 100 tabletop roleplaying game books.
