La Salle head football coach resigns after 45 seasons, multiple titles

La Salle College High School in Wyndmoor recently announced the resignation of head football coach John Steinmetz, an alum who has served 45 seasons with the Explorers.

The school’s press release said that in his nine seasons at the helm of the Explorers, Steinmetz compiled an overall record of 59-36 and his tenure included two Philadelphia Catholic League Championships (2015 and 2021) and a Catholic League Coach of the Year in 2015.

A 1977 graduate, Steinmetz began coaching at his alma mater in 1978 and worked in a number of different capacities, including freshman coach, JV coach, and defensive backs coach. He served under all three of the previous head coaches and was a significant part of the six Philadelphia Catholic League titles won during those years.

Steinmetz was the program’s defensive coordinator for twenty-three years (1984-1992, 2001-2014) before being named head coach in 2015.

“He ended his huddles with ‘Poise, Discipline, La Salle’ and his coaching lessons superseded x’s and o’s and focused on character development,” Kevin Dougherty ’00, the school’s Executive Vice President and former player and coach for Steinmetz said.

In the coming weeks, La Salle will begin a search for its next head football coach, the school said.
