The La Mott Community Center in Elkins Park was recently highlighted by USA Today.

The article-plus-video chronicles the center’s history, the area’s relationship to the Civil War, and its recent and indefinite closure. It also checks in on the Township’s applications for federal funding—dollars which would be put towards much-needed renovations.

U.S. Rep. Madeleine Dean put forward a congressional appropriation request this spring, seeking over $3.8 million in federal funds for the rehabilitation of the community center.

Another April application hopes for nearly $300,000 in Community Development Block Grant Program funds in fiscal year 2023, while Township Manager Alyson Elliott said Cheltenham has been working to submit several applications totaling over $4 million for center renovations. 

Earlier this month, the Center hosted a roundtable discussion with the PA House Majority Policy Committee, Rep. Napoleon Nelson, the Citizens for the Restoration of Historic LaMott, LaMott Citizens United and Cheltenham Township officials.

La Mott, which is located on Willow and Sycamore Avenues, is one of 16 facilities in the Township in disrepair.
